This Poem is Unspeakable

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

ICE employees

Just doing their jobs,

Just like people in Nazi Germany.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

Politicians just upholding the law.

ICE and ISIS,

ISIS and ICE.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

Cages are not new.

The rending of families is not new.

Detention centers, concentration camps—

Dehumanization, desensitization–

These are not new.  And these are here.

Now.

On the same land that holds up Fourth of July picnic tables.

The same land on which churches are built.

The same land mowed and watered for little league games.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

Traumatized all.

Horrified all.

Tortured all.

Abused all.

Raped all.

All rage and fire when they grow up.

All rage and fire when they grow up.

Traumatized now.

Horrified now.

Tortured now.

Abused now.

Raped now.

Let us be rage and fire!

Now!

Let us be rage and fire!

Rage and fire!

Rage and fire!

Now!

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

God’s memory is eternal.

O destroyers of families—

Wielders of bibles from safe, white churches–

God’s memory is eternal.

God’s memory is eternal.

Hearts in cages.

Lost from God.

2018.

Creators of hell.

Creators of nightmares.

God’s memory is eternal.

All blind eyes can see.

All deaf ears can hear.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

Never again pray, “Our Father.”

Never again cry, “The land of the free.”

Never again proclaim, “The land of the brave.”

Never again utter, “Oh my God! Oh my God!”

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.

If you’re only now seeing–

See!

If it’s taken you this long to wake up–

Wake up! Wake the fuck up!

Who cares how small your voice is–

Scream!

Who cares what measures you take to end this–

Take them!

Take them!

Take them!

End this! End this!  End this now!

It’s 2018.

There are

Children in cages,

Lost from their families,

In the United States of America.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

Children in cages.

Lost from their families.

2018.

United States of America.
