I\u2019ve yet to hear cows discuss frivolous subjects.<\/p>\n
When I left home that day, the house lifted<\/p>\n
onto chicken legs and followed me.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I went down to the creek to look for therapeutic rocks,<\/p>\n
where it was hard for the house to get down there,<\/p>\n
but the cloud mother made it, with her lingering cough,<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
and breath of beer. I collected as many rocks as would fit<\/p>\n
into my red windbreaker\u2019s pockets. I found a hawk\u2019s feather<\/p>\n
with somber hues, and carefully carried that with me as well.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Back then, there were no humdrum days. I started thinking<\/p>\n
there was a \u201cyou\u201d in everlasting life, and was glad,<\/p>\n
and walked through tunnels of autumn trees<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
on my way back to the cows to show them the rocks<\/p>\n
and the feather.\u00a0 Along the way I saw a pair of trousers hung on a laundry line,<\/p>\n
trying to walk the wind. I leaned over the fence, knowing<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
the cows had me in their luminous, dark eyes.<\/p>\n
One black and white cow twitched its ears, lifted its head, and said,<\/p>\n
with a mouth full of grass: \u201cGo home.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There are unwanted peonies and wisteria waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n
After a long time, I turned away, thankful my pockets<\/p>\n
were full of little pieces of mountains and wings.<\/p>\n
