This Morning I Did Zazen on the Toilet

This morning I did zazen on the toilet.
\nAs I shaved I thought: \u201cI\u2019d love to be a whore.\u201d
\nInstead, I\u2019ve been startled by a falling leaf,
\nand the lines on my palms extend out beyond my hands
\nmaking it difficult to whore.<\/p>\n
Someone is riding an ox backwards into the temple,
\na hermit sits on my roof, grinning, holding a sign
\nthat says: \u201cToo many vacancies.\u201d<\/p>\n
On my way to the station there\u2019s a butterfly serving tea at a cafe,
\nthere\u2019s a cap-sized boat floating in the middle of the lake,
\neveryone in the park is playing fetch with each other.<\/p>\n
I crunch a rice cake on the train. Looking out the window
\nI see a child turn into a tree, a nun leaps and turns into
\na bat and flies into the loft of a barn, the apple pickers
\nturn into bears, a coyote picks up a stick and pretends it\u2019s a flute.<\/p>\n
Later that night, a little girl pulls down the moon
\nwith her teeth, a black octopus roils across the hills,
\nthere\u2019s a fish swimming in the hair of the lady sitting in front of me.<\/p>\n
Just before sleep, I turn the band of my watch one notch
\ntighter, I try to cling to the soft breathing of the other passengers,
\nbut can\u2019t. A man walks down the aisle towards me with the head of a wolf.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow I\u2019m going to praise ferocity, and when I get off
\nthis train, I\u2019m going to run with the berserkers, and join the frenzy
\nof it all, and howl backwards into my life.<\/p>\n
