There are ants in South America,<\/p>\n
and parts of Texas and Louisiana,<\/p>\n
that cultivate mushrooms.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They forage, cut, shave, and compost leaves;<\/p>\n
they knead and heap the mushroom beds,<\/p>\n
sowing the spores with meticulous care;<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
they fertilize it all with their own tiny,<\/p>\n
ant shits. The mushrooms (rhozites gongylophia),<\/p>\n
would never exist if it wasn\u2019t for their diligence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They carry the sails of their leaves across<\/p>\n
the sea of undergrowth, shuttling spores in little<\/p>\n
caravans; they communicate with substrate-born<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
vibrations, and they even mate in the air. And,<\/p>\n
when the queen leaves the colony in search<\/p>\n
of fresh soil, the first source of nutrients<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
for the new garden is her own wings,<\/p>\n
which she tears off and lays there, like<\/p>\n
iridescent blessings to keep the future alive.<\/p>\n
