The first words of 2023 could go something like this:<\/p>\n

Dear Lord, please help us fix this mess,<\/p>\n

or<\/p>\n

look\u2014a road just opened that was never there before,<\/p>\n

or<\/p>\n

ssshh\u2026.come here\u2026do you hear that?<\/p>\n

Or maybe:\u00a0 You take that end, bend at the knees,<\/p>\n

watch your back\u2014OK\u2014on three.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible there won\u2019t be any first words.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it will be the sound of a bell\u2014low,<\/p>\n

and resonate, or the sound of a conch shell being blown<\/p>\n

by someone, somewhere on the shores of an unknown sea.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it will be the first light,<\/p>\n

coming from a searchlight scanning the sky,<\/p>\n

or<\/p>\n

maybe it will come from inside you\u2014<\/p>\n

open your mouth and see\u2014<\/p>\n

it might shine from a source unknown<\/p>\n

and land on the twelve-string sleeping in the corner.<\/p>\n

Perhaps there won\u2019t be a first word or first light.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it will be the first darkness of many,<\/p>\n

the first darkness of deep diving,<\/p>\n

the first darkness just before the curtains part,<\/p>\n

the first darkness of womb and night\u2014waiting<\/p>\n

for us to give birth to something, like hope,<\/p>\n

or a forgotten strength, or maybe a new language\u2014<\/p>\n

unspoken, yet understood by every hand and heart,<\/p>\n

perhaps it will be a humming, deep and rising\u2014<\/p>\n

revealed from the first morning that opens<\/p>\n

her cloaks and shawls\u2014a thrumming drone<\/p>\n

hummed by everyone, everywhere,<\/p>\n

ready, at any moment, to break<\/p>\n

into song.<\/p>\n
