Blue irises spiral open in slow motion<\/p>\n
the silken blades of their standards<\/p>\n
and crests, their falls and hefts,<\/p>\n
in the morning, in silence, in secret.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A dragonfly holds the swaying reed lightly<\/p>\n
as a wish.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A turtle stretches its yellow-painted neck and head<\/p>\n
up from the dark pond to get a look around<\/p>\n
with its wide, round, military eyes.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Water striders glide across the water<\/p>\n
with their long, outstretched symmetrical legs–<\/p>\n
they even hop and skate\u2014lighter than Jesus<\/p>\n
ever was.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Gold-speckled koi move like dreams.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I step closer and an unseen frog<\/p>\n
dash-plops into the shadowed-shallows\u2014<\/p>\n
like a lost prayer.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I stand there watching, waiting<\/p>\n
for my purpose, for a poem to appear, like<\/p>\n
a heron stepping from behind the curtain<\/p>\n
of the willow.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
How do I live consciously<\/p>\n
in this vast, ecology of hope?<\/p>\n
How do I answer unknown questions<\/p>\n
that swim in my soul? How do I wonder<\/p>\n
past my feeling lost in the everything that happens<\/p>\n
and why, holding on to a reed of my own?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A black-spotted-orange-fire-colored-<\/p>\n
salamander smoothly slips back under<\/p>\n
a decomposing log, but not before<\/p>\n
pausing to say: \u201cKeep an open mind.<\/p>\n
The answer is in the heron\u2019s unfolding wings.\u201d<\/p>\n
