{"id":2334,"date":"2021-01-28T12:29:39","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T17:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/?p=2334"},"modified":"2021-01-28T12:32:30","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T17:32:30","slug":"unafraid-ready-by-radiance-angelina-petro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/?p=2334","title":{"rendered":"Unafraid, Ready,  By  Radiance Angelina Petro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unafraid, Ready<\/p>\n<p>By<\/p>\n<p>Radiance Angelina Petro<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Walking through a waist-high field beyond Ypsilanti,<\/p>\n<p>brushing my palms over the whispering grain.\u00a0 The field ends<\/p>\n<p>at a gray, gravel road between an abandoned train station<\/p>\n<p>and dandelion-decorated tracks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unsure how far it goes.\u00a0 Resolute I will not turn back.<\/p>\n<p>Passing rusted, graffiti-swirled husks of train cars,<\/p>\n<p>I know I\u2019m being watched from somewhere by someone(s),<\/p>\n<p>and I am unafraid.\u00a0 My jean-jacket flutters a little in the thin-<\/p>\n<p>aired summer wind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A gray grasshopper helicopters from out of nowhere and lands<\/p>\n<p>some distance ahead.\u00a0 It blends so well with the road it disappears.<\/p>\n<p>As I near, it suddenly lifts in a whir of black-speckled wings, turns, banks,<\/p>\n<p>and again, lands in the road aways. \u00a0This time, I follow it with my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t help&#8211;and don\u2019t care if I can\u2019t help&#8211;wondering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Barred ticket windows, signs saying keep away from the tracks,<\/p>\n<p>do not pass the yellow line; a stopped clock, stock tracks<\/p>\n<p>with forever locked switches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The grasshopper rubs its hind legs, readying to catapult itself<\/p>\n<p>into the air. \u00a0I drop my jacket, take off my t-shirt, unafraid,<\/p>\n<p>and wings emerge from my shoulder blades\u2014<\/p>\n<p>unfolding, veined, transparent, fanning open, parting, thrumming,<\/p>\n<p>ready.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/abandoned-train-cars-terry-deluco.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2335\" src=\"http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/abandoned-train-cars-terry-deluco-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/abandoned-train-cars-terry-deluco-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/abandoned-train-cars-terry-deluco-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/thewonderchildblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/abandoned-train-cars-terry-deluco.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unafraid, Ready By Radiance Angelina Petro &nbsp; Walking through a waist-high field beyond Ypsilanti, brushing my palms over the whispering grain.\u00a0 The field ends at a gray, gravel road between an abandoned train station and dandelion-decorated tracks. &nbsp; Unsure how far it goes.\u00a0 Resolute I will not turn back.
