Autumn opens her notebooks,<\/p>\n
sending words sailing into the streets<\/p>\n
never once looking back.<\/p>\n
She lends them to the wind<\/p>\n
where they are bolstered by many<\/p>\n
changes of direction.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She knows who we are.<\/p>\n
She accepts us as we are\u2014cornstalk fiddles<\/p>\n
trying to tune our lives into song.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She knows we are apprentices<\/p>\n
of the sun, and that few have ever seen<\/p>\n
pineapple groves or wandered further<\/p>\n
into the mountains.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Autumn knows our spirits are tightly<\/p>\n
wound spools in need of loosening, so<\/p>\n
she coaxes us into wide spaces,<\/p>\n
into scouring rains and gloom,<\/p>\n
through the smoke of burning leaves,<\/p>\n
into the growing, early darkness,<\/p>\n
where we hastily scrawl her messages<\/p>\n
into linsey-woolsey phrases<\/p>\n
with hopes we\u2019ll turn, transformed,<\/p>\n
and strong, and change our names into fire<\/p>\n
against winter\u2019s coming cold.<\/p>\n
