The Habit of Thinking Light<\/p>\n

A Collage Poem<\/p>\n

\u201cDiscovering Relatively for Yourself,\u201d published 1981, with a few words by me<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Light behaves in many ways.<\/p>\n

It is a steady motion<\/p>\n

full of fruitful suggestions\u2014<\/p>\n

some of them far more subtle<\/p>\n

than others\u2014but for all of them<\/p>\n

the conclusion is clear:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We move through light.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And it\u2019s all happening in outer space\u2014<\/p>\n

it\u2019s an everyday experience<\/p>\n

and a startling idea, with many<\/p>\n

radiations intuiting the absurdity<\/p>\n

of how the edges move,<\/p>\n

of how we are traveling<\/p>\n

towards the right and good,<\/p>\n

with many little kindnesses<\/p>\n

becoming the habit of thinking light.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The upshot of it all:<\/p>\n

we are love\u2019s out and back journeys,<\/p>\n

we are not impossible conclusions,<\/p>\n

we are instantaneous events<\/p>\n

occupying small intervals of time,<\/p>\n

imagining things in new ways,<\/p>\n

we are dilations of light,<\/p>\n

reaching towards the kind of together<\/p>\n

where we surprise one another<\/p>\n

with messages of hope coming directly<\/p>\n

from the first flash of love and wanting,<\/p>\n

that still carry us to somewhere,<\/p>\n

to here.<\/p>\n
