Because it\u2019s there\u2014<\/p>\n
The chilled withering,<\/p>\n
The drying out of leaves<\/p>\n
And petals, the detachment<\/p>\n
And the lifting into spiraling<\/p>\n
Winds, the wishing it would<\/p>\n
Never end, the laughing<\/p>\n
At that wish, the seeing<\/p>\n
Gold and yellow, and all shades<\/p>\n
Of red torching across the hillside<\/p>\n
And over the rooftops,<\/p>\n
Because it\u2019s there\u2014the golden<\/p>\n
Boats in the slowing creek\u2014<\/p>\n
Because it\u2019s there\u2014the apples<\/p>\n
Blooming from where every blossom<\/p>\n
Bloomed\u2014the cinnamon and the clove,<\/p>\n
The orange peel, and the nutmeg\u2014<\/p>\n
Because one must let the sweetness<\/p>\n
Of the end warm the insides against<\/p>\n
The cold outside\u2014because the hearth<\/p>\n
Must be kindly again, because it will<\/p>\n
End, because winter unfurls, engulfs,<\/p>\n
Encloses\u2014because, of course, we know<\/p>\n
Spring sleeps and will rise again\u2014<\/p>\n
In this moment\u2014however and nevertheless\u2014<\/p>\n
It\u2019s there\u2014the detachment and lifting<\/p>\n
Into the spiraling wind.<\/p>\n
