A deer stepped from the side of the house<\/p>\n
As I sat in my car talking to a friend on the phone.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It stopped, trying to place my voice in the darkness.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I told my friend what was happening<\/p>\n
And ended the call.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I met its eyes, the moon leaned in.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
After a moment, the deer stomped one front hoof<\/p>\n
On the stone walkway, much like a horse would do,<\/p>\n
And disappeared into the night.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It occurred to me as I sat looking at its after image:<\/p>\n
I too move in and out of the shadows,<\/p>\n
I too pause to observe that which I don\u2019t understand,<\/p>\n
I too attempt to place my voice in the darkness,<\/p>\n
I too have ways of telling the world\u2014I might be quiet<\/p>\n
And some might say, timid\u2014but I too can stomp my foot<\/p>\n
And disappear never to be seen again.<\/p>\n
