When you go out you see.<\/p>\n
The world opens a little more<\/p>\n
With every turn of your gaze.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Yesterday, I walked the stretch of sidewalk<\/p>\n
I call, Buttercup Road.\u00a0 It\u2019s lined with buttercups on both sides,<\/p>\n
And if that doesn\u2019t sting you with joy<\/p>\n
Check your pulse.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I bent down to look more<\/p>\n
Closely, each and every buttercup<\/p>\n
Trembled with glee at the release of being seen\u2014<\/p>\n
Of little, old me witnessing their golden,<\/p>\n
Shiny faces; of me getting close enough<\/p>\n
I could have kissed them, petal by petal\u2014I could have\u2014<\/p>\n
But didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I kissed them instead with praise and adoration,<\/p>\n
And their hands opened wider for more.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
That evening, I went back to visit them.<\/p>\n
The sun was setting, the sky a splendid swirl<\/p>\n
Of the transgender flag, and there they were\u2014<\/p>\n
Their faces cloaked in prayer, their hands cupping<\/p>\n
The sun inside, their lips parted, touched<\/p>\n
With moonlight all night long, I said to them:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou dear, little lockets of honey, you holy, little chalices of sweetness,<\/p>\n
I realize you are not here for me, you are here, like me,<\/p>\n
For the sun; thank you for drawing my footsteps<\/p>\n
Closer to the light.\u201d<\/p>\n
