and those<\/p>\n
who know<\/p>\n
a bit<\/p>\n
about<\/p>\n
the depth<\/p>\n
of dark<\/p>\n
that hovers<\/p>\n
over my head<\/p>\n
knows<\/p>\n
how much<\/p>\n
i weep.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Walking<\/p>\n
amongst<\/p>\n
the autumn<\/p>\n
trees, tears<\/p>\n
shed<\/p>\n
into the wind,<\/p>\n
but do not fall\u2014<\/p>\n
they sail golden<\/p>\n
into the wind<\/p>\n
which is<\/p>\n
different<\/p>\n
than weeping.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
No. i am<\/p>\n
not cured<\/p>\n
of the illness<\/p>\n
which i am<\/p>\n
a carrier of.<\/p>\n
No. i am<\/p>\n
in autumn\u2019s<\/p>\n
reprieve.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Which begs<\/p>\n
the question:<\/p>\n
why not<\/p>\n
go out and be<\/p>\n
with the trees<\/p>\n
everyday?<\/p>\n
Because somedays<\/p>\n
the dark hands<\/p>\n
holding my ankles<\/p>\n
have just<\/p>\n
too strong<\/p>\n
a grip.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Which begs,<\/p>\n
of course,<\/p>\n
another<\/p>\n
question:<\/p>\n
how did you<\/p>\n
get free enough<\/p>\n
today to walk<\/p>\n
among the trees?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Look—<\/p>\n
that leaf\u2014<\/p>\n
that piece<\/p>\n
of gold lying<\/p>\n
in the brittle,<\/p>\n
browning grass\u2014<\/p>\n
those treetops<\/p>\n
lit up<\/p>\n
above the darkening<\/p>\n
branches—somehow<\/p>\n
lifted the shackles<\/p>\n
away and kissed<\/p>\n
my feet, and said:<\/p>\n
There<\/p>\n
are poems<\/p>\n
and photographs<\/p>\n
waiting<\/p>\n
for you.<\/p>\n
Go. You may<\/p>\n
never have<\/p>\n
the strength<\/p>\n
again.\u00a0 Go.<\/p>\n
We will<\/p>\n
hold off<\/p>\n
the dark as long<\/p>\n
