For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ——Second Timothy 1:7<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I want you to know<\/p>\n

I believe in spirits.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t believe there is some god<\/p>\n

Sitting around somewhere doling out spirits\u2014of any kind.<\/p>\n

Spirits are not things to be given<\/p>\n

Or taken.<\/p>\n

Spirits do the giving (and yes, the taking).<\/p>\n

Spirits move and live and have<\/p>\n

Their being in, around, above, below, and through<\/p>\n

Us. \u00a0They travel looking for places<\/p>\n

To stay\u2014sometimes forever, other times<\/p>\n

They just want to stop by, check out<\/p>\n

How things are going, and then move on.<\/p>\n

Other times they come to stay awhile<\/p>\n

And live in your hostel mind.<\/p>\n

Most are pretty unassuming and quiet,<\/p>\n

Whispering only now and again<\/p>\n

Via the wind in the trees above your head<\/p>\n

Or in some other such manner.<\/p>\n

Other times they can be a bit testy,<\/p>\n

Especially when you hook one<\/p>\n

With your emotions.<\/p>\n

Then they can become like angry fish<\/p>\n

And do their best to snap your line.<\/p>\n

And yes, there are ones that mean you harm.<\/p>\n

The main thing I want you to know though is this:<\/p>\n

I believe in spirits.<\/p>\n

It is important to me<\/p>\n

That you know that.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:\u00a0 spirits<\/p>\n

Are not ghosts.<\/p>\n

Spirits are spirits.<\/p>\n

Ghosts are ghosts.<\/p>\n

Spirits wander freely.<\/p>\n

Ghosts stay stuck in one place, screaming<\/p>\n

Or weeping, or running up and down the hallway,<\/p>\n

Sometimes they sit behind chairs or in walls laughing\u2014but not<\/p>\n

Easy laughing\u2014more like trapped, misunderstood laughing\u2014<\/p>\n

The kind one might hear in an asylum.<\/p>\n

Spirits are not angels either.<\/p>\n

Angels are angels.<\/p>\n

Spirits are spirits.<\/p>\n

Several of them (spirits)<\/p>\n

Live in me.\u00a0 I used to think<\/p>\n

There were just two\u2014a male and a female.<\/p>\n

Now I know my soul and body and mind<\/p>\n

Are a city of spirits.\u00a0 Sometimes<\/p>\n

Things thin out a bit and I am more<\/p>\n

A house of spirits, or a garden of spirits\u2014<\/p>\n

Like I said though—the main thing<\/p>\n

I want you to take away from this poem is:<\/p>\n

I believe in spirits.\u00a0 I think you<\/p>\n

Get that now, and whether or not<\/p>\n

You believe me, or whether or not<\/p>\n

You believe in spirits, does not matter to me.<\/p>\n

I told the truth.<\/p>\n

That is the best I can do.<\/p>\n
