Gift of a Lifetime

\nWhen the gift of a lifetime
\nFell into my lap, I opened my hands
\nTo receive it, and the flowers I held
\nDissolved into the darkening sky;
\nThe little flock of birds I sheltered
\nLifted into the April air and were gone,
\nAnd suddenly I sat–heart stung with revelation and rejoicing,
\nLiving truth flowing through my blood–afraid;
\nAnd my shape began to change like winter
\nInto spring, and my eyes, shadowed and wide,
\nLooked back into my life and saw it all clear as day,
\nBut could not see the road ahead;
\nAnd then, I rose, gift safely treasured away,
\nAnd my hands, empty, searching for light.<\/p>\n
