After combing through
\nLayers of moist earth and mazes
\nOf roots, the cicada nymph
\nBlooms from the ground
\nAnd begins climbing
\nSeeing only sky,
\nAnd branches
\nWaving: “Come on,
\nYou can do it!” And it climbs–
\nEyes on the prize, heart pumping,
\nWings tingling waiting for space
\nTo unlatch and spread,
\nVoice still trapped in an ever
\nThinning skin, confidence
\nGrowing with every plunge
\nOf its hooks–higher
\nUntil it suddenly stops
\nIn mid-motion,
\nPauses in time and space,
\nUnable to go even one more step
\nIn its old clothes,
\nAnd then,
\nAnd then it gives birth unto itself,
\nSlowly sloughing off
\nDoubts and fears,
\nNever once losing track
\nOf the heaven awaiting
\nAnd the heaven of the moment,
\nAnd the heaven of simply opening
\nItself to the sky,
\nAnd letting the song it has been
\nComposing for years soar
\nThrough the summer trees
\nAnnouncing to all things
\nThe truth of transformation,
\nThe truth that we are all
\nBound to change,
\nThe truth that even the darkest time
\nSpent among roots and soil,
\nLeads to wings, leads
\nTo open spaces, leads to becoming
\nWho you really are.<\/p>\n
