On the Devotion of Shaving

One by one,
\nFinger by finger,
\nI shave them
\nDelicately and
\nWith a certain,
\nIndescribable joy;
\nI am amazed at how fast
\nThe hair grows on them,
\nAnd on my legs, arms,
\nAnd chest\u2014places
\nI never before shaved
\nNor ever dreamed of shaving;
\nNow, every day,
\nI bend forward, pausing a moment
\nTo feel how much this feels
\nLike prayer, and I draw
\nA Venus razor up and under,
\nAround and around
\nMy calves and thighs, like
\nAn instrument of devotion,
\nAnd my legs are so
\nHappy, so grateful to be touched
\nAnd tended, and when I am finished
\nAnd feel their smoothness
\nAnd how they thrum with being loved,
\nThey tell me again and again
\nHow this was always
\nWhat they wanted;
\nAnd as I draw the razor
\nOver my arms, they too shine
\nWith gladness, as does
\nMy chest, although, to be completely
\nHonest, the skin on my chest isn\u2019t
\nAs happy about being shaved
\nAs the rest of this body,
\nThat said, it loves the absence
\nOf hair and the silkiness
\nIs remarkable, as is the strange sense
\nOf being a mother,
\nThat I have been living
\nShrouded with the fur of a father,
\nAnd now as it falls into the water
\nOf the tub, and my skin sings
\nAnd rejoices to be unburdened,
\nI see I am a priestess
\nAnd this body a vessel
\nOf holiness, and every stroke
\nOf the razor, every experiment
\nWith Nair, every time I run
\nA finishing razor to find
\nThe stray hairs, I am tending
\nA temple where Goddess lives
\nAnd aches to be known and to know,
\nWhere she shares lotus flowers
\nAnd sandalwood, where she kisses
\nMy soul, and breathes over my fears
\nAnd cares turning them
\nInto dragonflies and milkweed seeds,
\nWhere she tells me again
\nAnd again, \u201cThank you<\/em>
\nFor honoring me with the truth,<\/em>
\nThank you for being born and being<\/em>
\nYour very own mother, <\/em>
\nNo wonder you are tired, <\/em>
\nAllow me to nurse you<\/em>
\nInto fullness and cradle you<\/em>
\nAnd sing to you<\/em>
\nAs you rest in the grace <\/em>
\nOf the revelation<\/em>
\nI have given, and how bravely<\/em>
\nYou have surrendered<\/em>
\nAnd how naturally <\/em>
\nYou have stepped into your power, <\/em>
\nHow carefully you are tending <\/em>
\nThe garden of who you really are,<\/em>
\nCome, rest my daughter, <\/em>
\nAllow me to hold you<\/em>
\nAs sweetly as you are holding me.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
