Going Through the Motions

Fake it till you make it, they say.
\nI\u2019ve been faking it for the better part
\nOf forty-seven years,
\nThe rest has been out and out lies
\nScattered through fleeting moments
\nOf a deep awareness of the oneness of things.
\nI am trying now, more than ever
\nTo go through the motions of living
\nBecause the motions of dying
\nWould hurt too many people.
\nYet every living movement I make is hollow
\nAnd empty like a brainless robot riddled with rust.
\nI shave, clean my room, I look at you
\nAnd I write these words, I even gaze long moments
\nAt flowers and roots of trees,
\nI walk yet I do not feel my steps,
\nI lie in bed yet I do not feel my weight,
\nAnd it isn\u2019t so much a wind is blowing through me\u2014
\nIt is more I am not even here, not even a shell,
\nMore of a ghost–a living, breathing ghost.
\nAnd I do not know when I crossed over
\nInto dying while living. I have tried so hard
\nTo push through, to simply be,
\nTo tell you the truth of my journey,
\nAnd yet I can slip my hand through my own body,
\nThe mirror reflects the wall behind where I think
\nI stand. I want to tell you something beautiful,
\nI want to give you bushels of hope,
\nI want to tell you to never look away from the light
\nOr the darkness, I want to tell you to never refuse an embrace,
\nOr to never give up, yet I am faking it, so I truly do not know
\nIf what I am telling you means anything at all.
\nYet I am here. Going through
\nThe motions, the way waves go through
\nThe ocean, the way wind
\nGoes through
\nThe curtains,
\nThe way space
\nGoes through
\nMy eyes,
\nThe way time
\nGoes through
\nMy life,
\nThe way the end of the road
\nGoes through, straight through
\nTo the other side
